Scrum Master vs Business Analyst: Which Tech Career Is Right for You?

Two of the most in-demand non-coding tech roles. Here's how they differ in salary, skills, daily work, and which one matches your personality.

Business Analyst: The Translator

What you do: Bridge the gap between business stakeholders and development teams. You figure out WHAT needs to be built and WHY.

Daily activities: - Stakeholder interviews and workshops - Writing user stories and requirements documents - Creating process flows and wireframes - Analysing data to support decisions - UAT testing and validation

Best if you: - Love detailed analysis and asking "why?" - Enjoy writing clear documentation - Like working with data and finding patterns - Are comfortable in both business and technical conversations - Prefer structured, detail-oriented work

Typical background: Finance, consulting, engineering, accounting, healthcare

Scrum Master: The Coach

What you do: Facilitate Agile teams to work effectively. You don't manage people — you coach the team and remove blockers.

Daily activities: - Running daily standups (15 min) - Facilitating sprint planning and retrospectives - Removing impediments for the team - Coaching team members on Agile principles - Shielding the team from distractions

Best if you: - Love facilitation and group dynamics - Enjoy coaching and helping others grow - Handle conflict and ambiguity well - Are a natural leader who leads by influence, not authority - Prefer dynamic, people-focused work

Can You Do Both?

Absolutely. Many professionals combine BA and SM skills. In fact, employers LOVE this combination because:

  • You understand both the WHAT (requirements) and the HOW (delivery)
  • You can facilitate AND analyse
  • You're valuable in both Agile and traditional project environments
  • You can flex between roles based on team needs

Our flagship AI BA & Agile Training program covers both — giving you the flexibility to target either role or combine them.

How to Decide

Ask yourself these 5 questions:

  1. Do you prefer working with data or people? Data → BA. People → SM.
  2. Would you rather write a document or run a meeting? Document → BA. Meeting → SM.
  3. When there's a problem, do you analyse it or convene a group? Analyse → BA. Convene → SM.
  4. Do you like structure or flexibility? Structure → BA. Flexibility → SM.
  5. What energises you: finding the answer or helping others find it? Finding → BA. Helping → SM.

If you answered a mix — consider starting as a BA (more structured) and adding SM skills as you grow.
